The bat is the only nocturnal animal recognized as a flying mammal with a lifespan of over 40 years. It is the only specimen capable of eating 500 to 600 insects in a single night! Winter is here, and these little critters are starting to look for a place to hibernate.
Knowing that the extermination of this animal is strictly illegal since it plays an essential role in our ecosystem, what will be the solution to adopting it?
WHY DOES A BAT ENTER A HOUSE?
Many of these migratory bat species prefer to hibernate in caves, mines or under the bark of dead trees, as they are able to reduce their body temperature to between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius in order to cope with the freezing cold of winter and to keep their energy reserves. But some others prefer to hibernate in buildings and especially in the attic of houses where the temperature is quite humid.
This is where things start to get complicated for the simple reason that the excrement of this nocturnal animal is a potential carrier of diseases like histoplasmosis and rabies. Caution: These little bugs, protected in North America, can also transmit these diseases through scratches or bites!
ARE BATS DANGEROUS TO HUMANS?
During the hibernation period, this endangered species enters a state called torpor and survives thanks to its fat reserves, which can easily represent up to 35% of its weight. His heart rate drops to about 25 beats per minute, whereas in active periods it is usually between 400 and 1000 beats per minute. Generally, these bats come out of their torpor once a month to hydrate and urinate. This awakening requires a lot of energy, as they have to raise their body temperature from 36°C in a short time. For a few years now, this hibernation period has been disrupted because of a fungus that has spread to the barnacles. This fungus increases the number of awakenings of many bats in Canada. And the result is that we end up with infected bats. These small infected protected animals are recognized by the presence of white spots on the muzzle, which has earned the name “white muzzle syndrome” for this infection.
Many health departments in Ontario recommend that anyone who has come into contact with a bat get treated for rabies.
5 SOLUTIONS TO GET RID OF BATS
- USE A NATURAL BAT REPELLENT
Natural dog and cat repellents can be really effective in scaring away nocturnal animals. So, boil citrus peels in water, filter and then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. All you have to do is spray where your little intruders sleep! - INSTALL A BATSHELL

You can place rags soaked in mothballs near the bats’ nests, which should scare them away to find a new home. Be careful when using this product, as it is extremely toxic to humans and pets! - LIGHTING THE ROOMS
If bats have chosen your attic as a hibernation site, don’t hesitate to leave the lights on all night if you have access to them. These protected animals are nocturnal! They do not tolerate light well. It is still recommended that you hire a bat exterminator.
