The bat is the only nocturnal animal recognized as a flying mammal with a lifespan of over 40 years. It is the only specimen capable of eating 500 to 600 insects in a single night! Winter is here, and these little critters are starting to look for a place to hibernate.

WHY DOES A BAT ENTER A HOUSE?

Many of these migratory bat species prefer to hibernate in caves, mines or under the bark of dead trees, as they are able to reduce their body temperature to between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius in order to cope with the freezing cold of winter and to keep their energy reserves. But some others prefer to hibernate in buildings and especially in the attic of houses where the temperature is quite humid.

During the hibernation period, this endangered species enters a state called torpor and survives thanks to its fat reserves, which can easily represent up to 35% of its weight. His heart rate drops to about 25 beats per minute, whereas in active periods it is usually between 400 and 1000 beats per minute. Generally, these bats come out of their torpor once a month to hydrate and urinate. This awakening requires a lot of energy, as they have to raise their body temperature from 36°C in a short time. For a few years now, this hibernation period has been disrupted because of a fungus that has spread to the barnacles. This fungus increases the number of awakenings of many bats in Canada. And the result is that we end up with infected bats. These small infected protected animals are recognized by the presence of white spots on the muzzle, which has earned the name “white muzzle syndrome” for this infection.
