Installing rat traps is a very effective method of eliminating rats in the home and has the advantages of being safer and more environmentally friendly than poison. Where to place the traps is the key to success, but it is equally important to bait and understand some basic aspects of rat habits so that you can exterminate them effectively.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE RATS?
Rats have nocturnal habits, meaning that their most intense activity period is at night. So it’s possible that you have a rat invasion at home and you’ve never seen one. Therefore, it is important to keep your eyes open for any signs of rats:
- Live or dead rats.
- Rodent droppings around garbage or pet food.
- Evidence of gnawed wires or wood.
- Signs of burrows in the inner tubes, in the yard or on the false ceiling.
- Nighttime noises sound like scratches in the apartment or in the places where the pipes run.
- Stains on the walls.

HOW DO I KNOW IF IT’S A RAT OR A MOUSE?
Rat droppings are larger than mouse droppings, while rat droppings are between 1 and 3 cm, mouse droppings are less than 2 cm. And logically, rats are bigger than mice.
WHAT DO RATS EAT?
In the wild, they often eat grains, seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables. But if their favorite foods are not within reach, these omnivorous animals will feed on anything that can be brought to your mouth: debris, paper, garbage and pet food. Even in unfavorable situations, they may eat their own feces, even if it is not their preference.
HOW LONG DOES A RAT LIVE?
In general, the average lifespan of a rat is mainly based on its living conditions, genetics and diet. This means that if a rat lives in a safe place, has enough food and water, and has no genetic problems, it can live up to three years or more.

The best alternative is to use poison to kill the rats.
WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE BAIT FOR RAT TRAPS?
Contrary to popular belief, cheese is not the best bait to use in traps. Nuts, peeled nuts without shells, burnt hard bread or even our pets’ food can attract rodents. It is very important to make sure the bait is placed correctly, but the rat will eat it without releasing the trigger. We even recommend increasing the likelihood of trap activation by attaching the bait with a wire or fine wire to the trigger.

Rats are nocturnal animals. Therefore, finding a rat during the day indicates that it has a significant rat infestation, that its burrow has been disturbed, or that it is searching for food.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO AN INFESTATION?
If you hear a rat on the false ceiling or think you have a rat, don’t hesitate to act quickly, otherwise be aware that in one year, a pair of rats can generate more than 1200 offspring. The reason is that a three month old rat can already start to reproduce and have children. Each female rat can have up to 12 children in a litter and between 5 and 7 litters during the year.
