Why cockroaches
are a serious problem
Cockroaches are known to carry pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, that can cause disease in people. They can also trigger allergies or asthma in some people. They breed very quickly: a small infestation can become a major problem in very little time.
The German cockroach dominates
Canada has about a dozen established cockroach species. In Quebec, the German cockroach, 13 to 16 mm long, is by far the most common one in homes.
Fast breeding
A female can lay up to 48 eggs in a single hard capsule called an ootheca. If conditions are right, cockroaches can produce several thousand offspring in less than a year.
Hard to eradicate
Cockroaches are resilient insects: the oriental cockroach survives about a month without food if it has water. They can be hard to eradicate without a professional’s help.

German, oriental or American?
Our guides cover the appearance, life cycle and habits of each cockroach to help you identify the insect to eliminate.
Our extermination
method
You can count on A Extermination’s cockroach exterminators to do the job right from the start. Our technicians offer fast solutions against cockroaches, so you can get back to a healthy home.
Identification
Each species has its own habits, so identifying the insects to eliminate helps: the brown-banded cockroach, for example, settles in warm, often dry places.
Inspection
Search for droppings, oothecae and hiding spots behind appliances, in cupboards and in cracks.
Treatment
Professionals have access to more powerful treatments and aim to eliminate the whole colony.
Prevention
Seal the cracks and holes cockroaches can use to get in, and remove food and water sources.
Result: complete, lasting elimination

What we treat
most often.
Household species live in homes, warehouses, businesses and any other building heated in winter where they find enough moisture and food. The final price is set on site, after the inspection.
German cockroach
It likes warmth and moisture, which often leads it to kitchens where it finds food. It eats anything and can hide inside appliances.
- Appliance inspection
- Targeted bait gels
- Ootheca follow-up
Apartments and buildings
In apartment buildings, they can spread from one unit to another, so the treatment is coordinated between units.

Oriental and American cockroaches
The oriental cockroach, very dark brown, is about 2.5 cm long and lives in damp, dark places. The American cockroach, about 4 cm long, is the largest household cockroach.

What attracts cockroaches?
Food: cockroaches are omnivores and can eat almost anything, including leftovers, crumbs and even paper or glue. Water: any water source, such as a leaky sink or standing water, can attract them. Warmth and moisture: bathrooms, kitchens and basements are often their favourite spots.
Shelter: cracks and gaps in walls, cabinets and appliances are perfect places for them. Clutter: a cluttered space gives them plenty of places to hide and find food.
How can you tell if you have cockroaches?
Seeing cockroaches: if you see one during the day, there are probably many more, since they are mostly nocturnal. Droppings that look like ground pepper in kitchen cupboards, drawers and behind appliances. Oothecae (elongated egg cases). An unpleasant, sometimes sickening smell. Dead cockroaches or shed skins. Damage to books, curtains, wallpaper and food.
How do you get rid of cockroaches?
Cleaning: keep your home clean, especially the kitchen and bathroom, and remove all food and water sources. Pest control products: traps, bait gels and insecticides must be used correctly. Professional services: if the infestation is large or hard to control, professionals have access to more powerful treatments and aim to eliminate the whole colony. Prevention: seal the cracks and holes cockroaches can use to get in.
Is it serious to have cockroaches?
Yes. Cockroaches carry pathogens (bacteria and viruses) that can cause disease, allergies or asthma. They breed very quickly, their presence is disturbing and stressful, and they are hard to eradicate without a professional’s help.
How can you tell if there’s a cockroach nest in your home?
Daytime activity (a sign of a large infestation), small black or brown spots like ground pepper behind furniture or appliances, an unpleasant, sometimes sickening smell, and light brown, elongated egg cases (oothecae).
Why don’t store-bought sprays solve the problem?
Sprays kill the insects you hit directly, but most of the colony stays hidden behind appliances, under sinks and inside walls. Sprays can also scatter the survivors deeper into those hiding spots, which makes the infestation harder to reach. Bait gels work differently: the insects eat the bait and carry it back to where the others hide. Sprays don’t kill the eggs either: protected inside a hard case, they can hatch after the first visit. That’s why a lasting result takes a targeted treatment and a follow-up visit.
How much does treatment cost?
The price depends on the species and the size of the infestation. The final price is set on site, after the inspection. Call us at 1·888·582·2191.
