Why rats
are dangerous

Rats carry various diseases that can be passed on to people and animals, directly through a bite or contact with their urine or droppings, or indirectly through ticks, fleas or mites. These diseases include leptospirosis, Haverhill fever and salmonellosis.

01
3months to breed

Fast breeding

A rat reaches sexual maturity at around three months of age, and a female can have four to six litters a year: a small infestation quickly becomes a major problem.

02
25¢coin-size hole

Property damage

Rats have very strong teeth that let them gnaw through almost anything: wood, plastic, electrical wires, even some types of concrete and metal. They can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter.

03
1backwater valve

How they get in

In Montreal, rats often get in through the plumbing: an unused opening, a broken pipe or a damaged sewer line. A backwater valve in good working order also helps block this way in.

Rat

Rat or mouse?

A rat can weigh up to 1 lb, much bigger than a mouse. Brown rat (Norway rat or sewer rat) and black rat (roof rat): the treatment is not the same.

Read the guide

The steps of
pest management

After your call, the professional comes to your home to assess the situation. They carefully choose the control method and adapt the treatment to your surroundings.

Assessment

On site

Situation assessment and species identification: the Norway rat prefers damp places and the ground, while the black rat climbs and infests attics and roofs.

Strategy

Products selected

Once the strategy is set and the products are chosen, the technician secures the area to be treated.

Treatment

Specialized

The chosen solution is applied, specialized for the species and the level of infestation. Depending on the treatment, access to the area may be limited while it takes effect.

Prevention

Plumbing and access

Plumbing check, garage doors and entrances sealed, garbage in proper containers and a prevention plan for your at-risk buildings.

Result: complete, lasting elimination

Why traps
aren’t enough

Do it yourself Store-bought products

BUG OFF
Store-bought traps + poison
  • Rats are wary of new objects and often avoid traps
  • Indoor poison gets stored in hiding spots, within reach of children and pets
  • Poisoned carcasses cause odours and flies
  • Entry points (plumbing) stay open
  • No guarantee if they come back
Traps may seem effective, but that’s not always the case. For guaranteed work, call a qualified exterminator.

Your questions,
our answers.

Didn’t see your question? Call us: phone consultations are free, no appointment needed.

How do you get rid of rats at home?

Remove what attracts them: food in airtight containers, closed garbage bins, water leaks fixed. Seal entry points with rodent-proof materials such as metal or cement. Clean regularly. Trap in active areas. If the infestation is too large, call professionals who have the experience and the right tools.

Why are there rats in my house?

Looking for food (poorly closed bins, leftovers), looking for a safe, warm shelter (walls, attics, basements, garages), access to water (leaks, pet bowls), entry points (cracks and holes, even very small ones) and a local infestation in the neighbourhood.

Are rats dangerous?

Yes. Transmissible diseases (leptospirosis, salmonellosis, Haverhill fever), property damage that can cause short circuits, fires or water leaks, allergies caused by droppings, urine and hair, and stress for the occupants.

Why avoid poison indoors?

Rats like to stash food in hiding spots. That poisoned food can end up within reach of children or pets, or come into contact with your food. The carcasses of poisoned rats can cause odours and attract flies in places that may be impossible to reach.

Do rats attack people?

Bites can happen, especially to young children, older adults or people with limited mobility. Never try to catch or corner a rat with your bare hands. If you are bitten, clean the wound and see a doctor.

How do I know the rats are gone?

The signs stop: no fresh droppings, no more scratching in the walls at night, and no new gnaw marks or greasy rub marks along the walls. Fresh droppings are usually dark and shiny, while older ones are dry, greyish and crumbly, so cleaning the area after the treatment helps you spot any new activity. To clean safely, wear rubber gloves and never sweep or vacuum droppings: soak them with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) for 10 minutes first, as the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends. If the signs come back, call us: all our services under contract come with a 12-month written guarantee.

How can I tell a rat from a mouse?

A rat is much bigger: it can weigh up to 0.5 kg (1 lb). A mouse can squeeze through an opening of 6 mm (¼ in), while a rat can get through a hole the size of a quarter. Rat droppings are also much larger. Identifying the right rodent matters, because traps designed for rats aren’t suited to catching mice.

How much does treatment cost?

The price depends on the species and the level of infestation. The final price is set on site, after the inspection. Call us at 1·888·582·2191.
